OrthoCarolina and Compass Surgical Partners to Open New, Physician-Owned Surgery Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Raleigh, N.C. and Winston-Salem, N.C. – May 23, 2019 – A partnership including a group of local surgeons and Compass Surgical Partners have received a Certificate of Need from the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation Certificate of Need Section to develop an ambulatory surgery center in Winston-Salem. The partnership includes OrthoCarolina, its physicians local to Winston-Salem, and additional independent ophthalmologists and pain management specialists. The new surgery center is currently being called the Triad Center for Surgery.

The partners originally filed a Certificate of Need Application on May 15, 2018 and were deemed an approved applicant by the state in October 2018. The full certificate was provided to TCS in April 2019.

The surgery center will be located at 180 Kimel Park Drive in Winston-Salem in close proximity to I-40 and Forsyth Medical Center. It will include two operating rooms and three additional procedure rooms and will support a broad range of surgical procedures, including both common ASC-based procedures such as sports medicine and ophthalmology, and complex surgical cases such as total joint replacement and spine surgery. TCS will be the only multi-specialty freestanding surgery center in Winston-Salem. It will also be the first multi-specialty, non-hospital affiliated surgery center in Forsyth County. This stands to brings substantial value to residents of the broader Triad area, many of whom had no ASC option previously. ASC-based outpatient surgery is substantially less expensive for patients and payers than surgeries completed in hospitals. As a result, TCS will be a high-quality surgical service at a much greater value to the community than existing options.

“The new surgery center will expand access for patients in our service area.” says Dr. Trey Craig, an orthopaedic surgeon at OrthoCarolina. “Presently, there are limited options for surgery in ASCs, especially in Winston-Salem. The new center will also provide a consolidated location for OrthoCarolina and other local surgeons to perform outpatient surgery that does not require hospitalization. Advances in surgical technique over the years means we can very safely perform a broad range of surgical cases in our ASC.”

Compass will lead the development of the facility and will serve as the operating partner. TCS is expected to be operational in May 2020. As with all Compass-managed surgery centers, TCS will be a fully licensed ambulatory surgery center, certified by Medicare, and accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC).
